¡Bienvenidos a los 55 nuevos seguidores a Gringo Jobs! Agradecemos mucho tu tiempo para leernos y te pedimos nos ayudes a compartir con amigos y colegas que les pueda interesar para seguir creciendo la comunidad!
Empezamos con una estadística que marca - 70% of jobs are never even listed.
The bad news 😞
As a Latin American dev, the deck is stacked against you. You are an outsider, you didn’t go to a school that all the US recruiters know about. No tienes un tío rico que justamente tiene una vacante hecha para ti y sin cualquier otro candidato. You might not know anybody in the US. So how are you supposed to find these hidden jobs?
Busca aliados 🇲🇽🇨🇴🇳🇮…
Go on Linkedin and find anybody who worked at your target company who perhaps went to a university in your country. (tip: pay the extra $25 for one month of LinkedIn premium)
I’m sure you will find that they have a similar background to you, and would be happy to help. People love to help out, and even more so if it's somebody who is similar to them.
Build relationships before you need a job 🤝
This takes a bit longer, but it's worth it. When a company posts a job description, the noise begins. They will get approached by tons of candidates, good and bad, but also recruiters like me, and even job boards.
So find the head of engineering and the head of HR. Maybe they are on Twitter. You will be surprised how many important people are on Twitter but have very few followers. Reach out. Have some interesting questions about the product and direction.Make it about the company.
Predict the growth of the company 📈
Companies say they are unique, but they grow in very predictable ways. Consider your average B2B SaaS company
They will start with devs and sales people, followed by a customer success team.
Then the sales team will get broken out into inside sales and account executives.
Then they will probably hire support and sales engineers if their product is complex.
If they are in adtech or fintech, there is a high chance that they will continuously be hiring data scientists and ETL engineers.
See where we are going? You don’t actually need to wait until a job description gets created to know what they will be hiring for. So go build the relationship before the job becomes “official”.
Go find the un-sexy companies 🐽
You know how many people enthusiastically apply to a SaaS startup that helps industrial printers estimate how much ink they need? Very, very few.
So instead of applying to companies that just got mentioned in Techcrunch, or anything that has to do with fashion (seriously, they get inundated with interest and don’t pay well), go find the boring, the unsexy, the ugly ducklings. They will be happy someone is interested.
The tweet of this week comes from Kyle Tibbitts, head of marketing at Fast.
Vicente Plata is offering 1-1 mentorship for free. Vicente is a Lead Engineer at Hims and Hers, a well known health tech startup. He currently lives in Ontario.
