How do you get a raise remotely?
We are coming up to 350 subscribers! That is incredible! If you know anybody who would be interested, please share the post!
And let’s face it: like me you are probably a dutiful cog in the capitalist system, a money motivated rat in a maze, compulsively tapping the button to release the cocaine pellet until you brain melts….🤪
Anyway, I digress. Hay muchos artículos sobre como hacerlo - here, and here for instance.
Let me give you some tips!
Be over-present
One of the risks that comes with remote work is the absence of the office politicking, water cooler chats. To be honest, I would trade 100x working in my pyjamas for a “chat” with Diana from accounting about what her 5 year old did this weekend. However - there is one big plus of being in the office. You show face.
It’s important to be a presence in the company beyond your work, if you want to show face in a remote world. It could be anything from connecting with people who are not in your direct team to participating in random contests that the HR team invents. Basically, be overly-present. More that you would if you were in an office.
Pro tip: your HR team is probably worried about transitioning to remote, and how to make sure the company still feels like a real company with a culture..etc…This is your chance to help them!
Prepare your 1-1
The weekly meeting you have with your boss is the meeting where you will ultimately ask for the raise. Often, he/she is busy and doesn’t really make much of an effort. You need to be the proactive one. Go into every 1-1 with the following.
Results for the week
Challenges + possible solutions
Plans for the following week
Add some numbers, and do the same for the month. Your boss will be impressed, and it will be much harder for them to say no to a raise.
Build connections across the company, especially in sales
Maybe you don’t have any professional link with them, but believe me they have some of the most valuable information about the company. And they LOVE to talk.
Find them on Slack and become their friends.
Be ready to leave
