I just finished a great interview with Yesi Days, also known as @silvercorp. She runs a wonderful Youtube channel and we chatted about how to maximize your chances of success while interviewing with US (and international) companies.
Its 2 hours of me speaking Spanish (!), but I encourage you to take a listen.
Here are some of the highlights:
Are certificates like Platzi, Coursera, Udemy…etc…important to put on a resume?
Not really. They are nice to haves but without other diplomas/experience they won’t move the needle. It looks like this created quite the discussion on Twitter - feel free to participate!
What should you do if you are a junior with no experience?
Build experience any way you can. Do projects, and share them. If you have the time, do an internship. One of the advantages of computer engineering is that there are no barriers for you to do you craft (as opposed to civil or structural engineering).
So build your experience now, with or without a job.
What is the level of English I need to get a job in the US?
Officially its B2. In reality, no American knows what that means. I would recommend practicing by watching conferences or Ted Talks on Youtube (that is sort of a business English level) and then try for a few interviews. If you find yourself struggling, go back to basics.
We talk about those an many more themes in the video, so let me know what you think!
That’s all folks! Thanks for giving me your precious time and attention. Follow me @GeorgesJanin and @GringoJobs on Twitter. I’d love to hear your feedback.
Peace and Jobs,
